Fierce Storms Leave Thousands without Power in Western Australia
State-owned utility Western Power reported that approximately 70,000 customers — including residents across the capital, Perth — remained without electricity as of Monday morning, following back-to-back severe storms that battered the southern half of the state on Saturday and Sunday.
Wind gusts exceeding 100 kilometers per hour were recorded across southern and southwestern WA during a punishing 24-hour period of storm activity that left widespread damage and flooding in its wake.
The State Emergency Service had logged around 700 calls for assistance by Monday morning, with the bulk of requests tied to roof damage, structural failures, and fallen trees. Authorities confirmed that no injuries had been reported as of Monday.
Among the most dramatic scenes of destruction, an apartment building in the coastal Perth suburb of Cottesloe had its roof torn clean off, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Nearby residents have been urged to remain indoors while assessments continue.
In a separate development, an 11-year-old boy reported missing from Perth's western suburbs on Saturday evening was located safe and unharmed on Sunday morning, police confirmed.
Western Power said it expects to restore power to most affected customers by Monday night, local time.
